I offer one-on-one piano lessons using video streaming service such as Skype and Zoom. I have found it to be a very positive experience. This has opened up many new doors, especially to those who do not live in my area but want to learn how to play the piano. This is also a great option to use for students who normally come to my studio but who cannot get to their piano lesson for whatever reason. Sometimes it's because the weather conditions are not good. Other times it may be that my student is a little under the weather but can still have a piano lesson. This offering is a nice convenience to families who have very busy schedules.
1. You will need a computer with a webcam, tablet or a smart phone. I recommend that you have reliable internet as well.
2. Video Apps- I am presently using Skype but I am also researching teaching with Zoom in the near future. Having both options on your device is recommended.
3. A quite environment is important so the student doesn't have to many distractions. It's not always easy to provide, but to try and plan some quite time during the 30 minute lesson makes it easier for learning.
Online piano is the same as if you were to come to my studio. Students need to keep a pencil handy for circling or making notes in the their pieces. Students will also need a notebook to write down their weekly assignments.
I generally suggest to set up your device so I can see the student and the piano keys. Setting up the device off to the side works well. I prefer the distance not to be to far back as I need to see the hands very well. There are some really great device holders that I highly recommend looking into.
